About

The Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) is a nonprofit scientific research center and direct experience lab specializing in the intersection of science and profound human experience. IONS is dedicated to exploring the frontiers of consciousness and extended human capacities to promote a more holistic view of human potential and the nature of reality.

Inspired by a profound experience of personal discovery, Apollo 14 astronaut and 6th person to walk on the moon, Dr. Edgar Mitchell created IONS in 1973 to explore the interplay between scientific knowledge and inner knowing. Celebrating 50 years, IONS has the world’s leading team of multidisciplinary scientists conducting research on frontier topics in consciousness and its impact in our lives.

IONS is inspired by the power of science to explain phenomena not previously understood, harnessing the best of the rational mind to make advances that further our knowledge and enhance our human experience. When we collectively embody our true interconnection and embrace our inner wisdom we envision the creation of a more compassionate and thriving world. Mission

To reveal the interconnected nature of reality through scientific exploration and personal discovery.

Vision

Humanity will create a more compassionate and thriving world when we collectively embody our true interconnection and embrace our inner wisdom.

Guiding Hypothesis

Everything is interconnected. By embodying an awareness of this interconnection, we can tap into information and energy not limited by space and time, and profoundly amplify transformation, innovation, and well-being.

History

Over 50 years ago, Dr.Edgar Mitchell became the sixth person to walk on the moon. As a member of the Apollo 14 mission, his purpose was to conduct in-depth research on the lunar surface. As his mission came to an end, however, an entirely new purpose emerged—one that would define his life for decades to come and contribute to the awakening of the planet.

As his spaceship traveled back from the moon amidst the vast darkness of the cosmos, Dr. Mitchell’s eyes became fixed on the blue sphere we call home. As he neared Earth, he was enveloped by a profound sense of universal connectedness.

I realized that the story of ourselves as told by science—our cosmology, our religion—was incomplete and likely flawed. I recognized that the Newtonian idea of separate, independent, discrete things in the universe wasn’t a fully accurate description. What was needed was a new story of who we are and what we are capable of becoming.
Dr. Edgar Mitchell

Dr. Mitchell’s transformative experience led him to establish the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) in 1973. He understood that by applying the scientific rigor used in his explorations of outer space, we could better understand the mysteries of inner space—the space in which he felt an undeniable sense of interconnection and oneness

Leadership Biographies

Science Team

As an organization, we’ve brought together scientists, researchers, thought leaders, visionaries, healers, strategists, and outstanding staff to form one of the most dynamic, interdisciplinary teams working in the field today. Everyone at IONS understands the power of approaching work with both the head and the heart. Following are brief biographies of our science researchers:

Helané Wahbeh, ND, MCR is the Director of Research at the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) and an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Neurology at Oregon Health & Science University. Dr. Wahbeh is clinically trained as a naturopathic physician and research trained with a Master of Clinical Research and two post-doctoral research fellowships. She has published on and spoken internationally about her studies on complementary and alternative medicine, mind-body medicine, extended human capacities, stress, posttraumatic stress disorder and their relationships to physiology, health, and healing. Dr. Wahbeh is especially known for her research around—and noetic approach to—channeling. For a full bio visit: noetic.org/profile/helane-wahbeh. See interview questions here.

Dean Radin, MS, PhD, is Chief Scientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences and Associated Distinguished Professor at the California Institute of Integral Studies. He was awarded an Honorary DSc in yoga research from S-VYASA. Before joining the research staff at IONS in 2001, he held appointments at AT&T Bell Labs, Princeton University, University of Edinburgh, and SRI International. Dr. Radin is author or coauthor of hundreds of technical articles, some 145 peer-reviewed journal articles, four dozen book chapters, and four best-selling, popular books. He has given over 750 invited presentations and interviews for government, military, business, scientific, and other groups around the world. For a full bio visit: noetic.org/profile/dean-radin.

Arnaud Delorme, PhD, is a Scientist at IONS and has been studying human consciousness for the last 20 years. He is a CNRS Research Director in Toulouse, France, and a senior Research Scientist at the University of California, San Diego. He is a long-time Zen meditator, and recipient of several research prizes. He is the author of some 160+ peer-reviewed publications, and is best known for his work on the neural correlate of mind wandering and for developing the EEG software that is now the most-used in EEG research worldwide. He is the author of Why Our Minds Wander: Understand the Science and Learn to Focus Your Thoughts. For a full bio visit: noetic.org/profile/arnaud-delorme. See interview questions here.

Garret Yount, PhD, is a molecular neurobiologist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) where his research focuses on laboratory-based models of exceptional human abilities. He obtained his BS from the Department of Molecular & Cell Biology at the Pennsylvania State University and his PhD from the Department of Neurobiology & Behavior at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He began his formal studies in consciousness research with a small grant from the Institute of Noetic Sciences in 1995, which allowed him to work with biofield practitioners and spiritual healers in the laboratory. Since then, Dr. Yount has conducted carefully controlled laboratory experiments with spiritual healers and biofield practitioners from around the world, including China, Brazil, Canada, USA, Japan, India, Russia, Hungary, and Sri Lanka, and was fortunate to be among the first scientists to be awarded a Research Project Grant (R01) from the National Institutes of Health to study energy healing. He is the author of many peer-reviewed scientific papers and the book Why Vibes Matter: Understand Your Energy and Learn How to Use it Wisely. For a full bio visit: noetic.org/profile/garret-yount. See interview questions here.

Cédric Cannard, PhD is a Senior Research Associate at the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS). He completed a Bachelors in sport science and a MSc in neuroscience during which he worked brain atrophies (MRI) associated with Schizophrenia with the ISTCT laboratory in Caen, France, and then on brain oscillations (EEG) involved in color vision processing with the CerCo Laboratory in Toulouse, France. He then moved to California to become a research assistant for the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS), and in December 2018 received a 3-year grant to work on his PhD in neuroscience under the co-supervision of Helané Wahbeh and Arnaud Delorme, focusing on well-being, EEG methods, wearable neurotechnologies, consciousness, and psi. In early 2022, Cédric successfully earned his PhD from Paul Sabatier University, CNRS, France. For a full bio visit noetic.org/profile/cedric-cannard.

FAQs

What does the IONS science team study?

All of our projects fall under our overarching hypothesis that “Everything is interconnected, and that embodying that awareness reveals information and energy not limited by space and time, and can profoundly amplify transformation, innovation, and well-being.” Our two major research foci to evaluate this hypothesis are the IONS Discovery Lab and IONSx.

How does IONS define “Consciousness”?

The word consciousness can be used in many ways in our culture. A neuroscientist may describe consciousness as the state of being awake and aware of one’s surroundings or how the mind perceives something. The consciousness IONS studies refers to a “milieu of potential,” the shared ground of being from which all experiences and phenomena arise and eventually return.

Where can I find scientific articles on what IONS studies?

Our science team’s peer-reviewed papers are available on our Publications page. Google Scholar is also an excellent, user-friendly search engine/database that lists articles from peer-reviewed journals and academic books. Another helpful source that contains a comprehensive database of medical research is PubMed.

Research Prize

The Linda G. O’Bryant Noetic Sciences Research Prize will be awarded annually to an individual or team whose research helps extend the science of consciousness beyond the confines of the materialistic paradigm. Realized and administered by the IONS team, the prize augments our global mission in fostering creative and leading-edge approaches to the scientific investigation of consciousness and life. We are profoundly grateful to IONS Board Member and longtime supporter Linda G. O’Bryant for her generosity in establishing this visionary science prize.

Prevailing neuroscience theories of consciousness are grounded 17th-century physics. The physicalist assumption purports that material substrates in the brain, like neurons, have evolved to attain a level of complexity that ultimately gives rise to the emergence of consciousness (or, subjective awareness). Although this stance remains a hypothesis, it has lead some to make excessive claims about consciousness and human existence (“You are a machine made of meat.” –Marvin Minsky; “You are nothing but a pack of neurons.” –Francis Crick).

The aim of the Linda G. O’Bryant Prize is to support research on non-physicalist models of consciousness. These do not assume that a physical substrate generates consciousness; may allow that consciousness is as fundamental as matter, energy, or spacetime; and consider that the physical world might arise out of consciousness rather than the other way around. These perspectives, while as yet marginal for Western science, nevertheless underlie most ancient, esoteric, and Eastern cultures. Could such a non-physicalist framework better explain the full range of reported human phenomenology? Scholars and scientists have debated this question for thousands of years with no clear resolution. New models, experiments and data are needed to inform the research and advance our scientific understanding of consciousness. The goal of the Linda G. O’Bryant Prize is to provide ongoing support for this endeavor.
