Exploring the Science of Telepathy

Have you had the uncanny experience of knowing who was about to call, or sensed what someone else was thinking without a word being spoken? These experiences are called telepathy and fascination with this topic is growing.

One of the first questions people ask about telepathy is, “Is there any evidence?”

Many may believe there is no scientific evidence for telepathy.

That’s simply not true.

Decades of Research

At the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS), we’re working to uncover the mechanisms of how telepathy operates, and what it could mean for our understanding of consciousness and our lives.

Dr. Helané Wahbeh shares a compelling overview of the long history of telepathy research in a ConnectIONS Live interview with Dr. Diane Hennacy Powell. The conversation also highlights the growing body of evidence of telepathy and features insights from Dr. Powell, the core researcher featured in The Telepathy Tapes.

What Is Telepathy?

Telepathy is the intuitive or psychic ability to communicate thoughts or feelings from one mind to another. It’s a type of extrasensory perception (ESP), sometimes called psi phenomenon.

Mental impressions can be received as images or words. Some people experience sensations in their bodies. This is known as telesomanic, the experience of spontaneously feeling the pain or physical symptoms of another person at a distance, often between individuals with close emotional bonds. We study telepathy in different ways.

Experimental telepathy research has been conducted for over a century, including at Harvard University in the 1920s. Today, IONS continues this legacy with our latest Mind-to-Mind Communication study.

Published Research

IONS advances the science of telepathy through publishing peer-reviewed papers in established journals. Review IONS’ publications on telepathy.

We investigated telephone telepathy’s accuracy and mechanism in the study, Who’s Calling? Evaluating the Accuracy of Guessing Who Is on the Phone, published in Explore.

Participate in Telepathy Research

To further our scientific research, we often invite individuals like you to participate in our studies.

Have you ever had a mind-to-mind connection?

Do you ever know or feel what someone else feels or thinks? Do you frequently feel connected to a loved one even when you haven’t seen or communicated with them in some time?

IONS is seeking emotionally bonded pairs or twins to investigate the phenomenon of mind-to-mind communication. If you have experienced such “telepathic” instances, we invite you to take part in this study.

Can we detect car accidents with intuition? Help us find out.

The purpose of this study is to better understand how our body and brain may subconsciously anticipate unpredictable car accidents. The study consists of being in a self-driving car in virtual reality (VR) while we monitor your brain, heart, and skin electric activity, and eye movements. If you are a healthy adult and don’t have adverse reactions when driving a vehicle, you may be able to  participate.

The State of Telepathy Research

What We Know

  • Telepathy occurs under controlled laboratory conditions.
  • There are relationships between the physiology (e.g., brain waves, heart waves) among separated participants.
  • Emotional and intuitive connections likely play a role.
  • People with meditation or attention training likely have more telepathic experiences and do better on laboratory telepathy tasks.
  • Altered states of consciousness, like relaxation with less sensory input and sleep, may support receiving telepathy impressions.

What We Don’t Know (Yet)

  • The exact mechanisms underlying telepathic experiences.
  • If everyone experience telepathy or are there individual traits and states that affect telepathic ability.
  • If and how telepathy is enhanced by shared genetics or emotional closeness.
  • If we can successfully train people to learn telepathic communication.

How Common Is Telepathy?

Research suggests that telepathic experiences are far more common than most people think.

According to an IONS study, Exceptional Experiences Reported by Scientists and Engineers, 70% of respondents reported having had a telepathic or mind-to-mind communication experience at some point in their life.

These experiences are not confined to any one culture or belief system. In fact, cross-cultural studies show that telepathy is reported globally and often interpreted within a spiritual or intuitive framework.
