At Home Within

Cassandra Vieten, PhD

A Personal Growth Program for Homeless Adults

Project Status:  Complete

In 2003, the executive director of the Committee on the Shelterless (COTS) approached the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) to develop an application for shelter residents based on research findings about the role of consciousness in transformation. Through a dynamic collaboration between the shelter staff and IONS researchers, At Home Within was born. The purpose of this study was to find out whether participating in a multi-week class focused on body, mind, and spirit in which residents learned practices such as meditation, yoga, qi gong, music, dance, drumming, and other practices resulted in reduced stress, improved mood, and better responses to difficult emotions and life circumstances. Self reports from participants and COTS staff were very positive.
