The reason I’ve spent nearly 17 years working at, and financially supporting, IONS is that I know that a shift in consciousness is absolutely necessary to make real and lasting change in how we treat each other and the planet.
Today, we have the capacity to feed, clothe, shelter, and provide renewable energy to every person on Earth. Why don’t we? Because we have been led to believe it is not possible. It is limitations in the way we view reality, not our actual capacities, that are holding humanity back from being the best we can be and creating a future that promotes thriving for all.
We have the ability right now to enliven our classrooms with the mystery and wonder of expanding our view of the world, to improve the outcomes of modern medicine with routine inclusion of mind-body healing practices, to enhance the lives of our elders, to create technologies that support self-transcendence and compassion for others, and to harness the power of collective intention for social good.
This is the work IONS is doing, and I hope you will lend your shoulder to making these things happen.
While the last year has seen a regression toward isolationism and nationalism, removal of environmental protections, reductions in civil rights and assurances of care for our young, poor, and elderly, all of which concerns me greatly, we must not despair.
Today there is a groundswell of hope and purpose rising in response. Young people and old, rural and urban, throughout our society are taking a firmer stand for our interconnectedness and interdependence than ever before. They are using the same kind of ingenuity that took us to the moon in the 60s, to radically improve the world they have inherited today.
We support our youth and our societal innovators by trailblazing a path toward transformation that is based on both science and wisdom practices. People are linking arms and working together – and they look to IONS for trustworthy scientific evidence, the tools for creating change, and a worldwide community of fellow visionaries who refuse to be limited by old ways of thinking. This is what my friend and our founder, Apollo 14 Astronaut Edgar Mitchell had in mind – he would be proud.
