Loren Carpenter: Remembering a Visionary

IONS Communications Team

IONS would like to honor the extraordinary life and contributions of the man who trailblazed the film industry and brought his brilliant, inquisitive mind to the forefront of consciousness research. Loren Carpenter passed away peacefully on December 20th, 2025 at the age of 78.

His work, from Vol Libre’s fractal landscapes to RenderMan, the industry-standard rendering software, transformed what was possible on screen. While many know him for his Oscar-winning achievements in computer science, those who worked alongside him remember his kindness, humor, and brilliance.

Loren joined the IONS science team in 2014, after transitioning from his role as Senior Research Scientist at Disney/Pixar. At IONS, he worked primarily with experiment design and construction, using his extensive fabrication, computer and electronics skills. His contributions include new instruments for recording and analyzing quantum background noise and instruments for sensing and amplifying mind-photon interaction.

In addition to his award-winning work in computer animation, Loren and his wife Rachel explored new concepts in interactivity and computer art through their own company, Cinematrix, Inc. Loren’s journey from the heights of cinematic achievement to the pioneering study of noetic phenomena reflects a life driven by curiosity and a desire to understand the fabric of our reality.

Having worked closely with Loren, Executive Chair of the Board Claudia Welss reflected on his lasting impact:

“IONS was fortunate to benefit from Loren’s rare gift of seeing what others couldn’t. He saw the importance of our mission so clearly that he dedicated the most recent chapters of his life to being a noetic scientist. While he made history revolutionizing visual effects in filmmaking, his pioneering work at IONS will bend history toward a more noetic future.  The Global Consciousness Project 2.0 and the Edgar Mitchell Overview Effect Virtual Reality Experience (EMVRX) were just two of the many ways he used his artistic and technical brilliance at IONS in service of humanity’s deepest questions about human potential and the true nature of reality. Loren reminded us all that the divide between art and science, and between science and spirit, are illusions, and he did so with a passion, heart and humility that changed us just by being in his presence.”

IONS Fellow and former president Cassandra Vieten also shared kind words in honor of Loren:

Loren Carpenter, one of my favorites, so sad to see you go. Brilliant, kind, funny, encouraging, generous, innovative. From IONS to Burning Man, NASA to Nicasio, may wherever you go next benefit from your presence as much as we all did.”

We are so grateful for Loren’s decades-long support of IONS’ research and mission. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a gift in memory of Loren to IONS. Your generosity fuels pioneering consciousness research that Loren cared about and contributed to as part of the IONS team.

Loren’s legacy lives on in every frame of digital animation and in the cutting-edge experiments he helped build at IONS. He remains an inspiration to us all, and he will be deeply missed. We offer our heartfelt condolences to his family and circle of friends.
