Aware, Awake, Alive: A Contemporary Guide to the Ancient Science of Integral Health and Human Flourishing
The text book for this course will be Aware, Awake, Alive: A Contemporary Guide to the Ancient Science of Integral Health and Human Flourishing, by our teacher Elliot S. Dacher, MD. All course participants are requested to purchase the paperback book with accompanying practice CD for an additional $19.95.
Prior to the first session of class, please complete the following readings from Aware, Awake, Alive:
- Letter to the Reader
- Chapters 1-3
Course topics include:
- Detailed instruction in the time-tested practices of meditation and mind training
- Cultivating a mind and lifestyle that supports optimal well-being
- Understanding the fundamental causes of stress, distress, and suffering, and applying precise remedies which can progressively bring an end to suffering
- The alleviation of afflictive and disturbing emotions
- Accomplishing the shift from self-centeredness to other-centeredness – the noble heart
- Work as a form of practice
- Transforming adversity into opportunity
- The principles and practices of integral health and human flourishing
Each of these topics will be presented in the context of a highly experiential program focused on the methods of inner development. At the conclusion of this program each individual will have established an ongoing series of practices that will assure an improvement in health and well-being.
The goal of integral health and inner development is to reduce stress, distress, and suffering and promote the progressive attainment of the innate qualities of human flourishing: authentic happiness, serenity, wisdom, compassion, boundless freedom, and the perfection of health. According to course instructor, Dr. Dacher, “We do not have to create these qualities. We merely have to remove the obstacles to their full realization. That is the result of inner development and the expansion of consciousness that occurs with study, reflection, and practice. The result is an optimal well-being, the perfection of health, that persists through all of the difficulties of life, including disease, aging and death.”
