New Mediumship & Channeling Code of Ethics Created

Novato, CA, June 4, 2025 – There is exciting news in the world of mediumship and channeling! IONS Director of Research Helané Wahbeh, ND, MCR, published a code of ethics for mediums and trace channelers.

This marks the first time a scientific, peer-reviewed journal published a code of ethics for these practitioners – expanding professionalism in the medium and trance channeling fields.

Mediums (individuals who communicate with the deceased) and trance channelers (those who allow the deceased or other entities to communicate through them) have been practicing their skills throughout history across many cultures and time periods.

In modern times, the field of mediumship and trance channeling is rapidly expanding. Mediums and channelers now can ensure that they model professional business practices by following this new code of ethics, which was compiled by their peers. The goal was to improve the reputation of practitioners of these two practices, while also making sure clients feel secure and supported in using their services.

Although there is no governing body requiring adherence to these new ethical standards, the intention is that professionals in the medium and trance channeling field reference this document for self-regulation.

“I am confident that having a well-defined set of ethical standards will be essential for fostering professionalism as mediumship and trance channeling continue to earn respect and greater acceptance. More clients also will be aware of this code, and understand the value of these services, building trust,” says Dr. Wahbeh.

Dr. Wahbeh, a highly respected scientist, is clinically trained as a naturopathic physician. She is a subject matter expert in alternative medicine, mind-body medicine, extended human capacities, stress, and post-traumatic stress disorder – and their relationships to physiology, health, and healing. Her book, The Science of Channeling: Why You Should Trust Your Intuition and the Force That Connects Us All, shares her years of extensive channeling research.

Dr. Wahbeh is also an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Neurology at Oregon Health & Science University, an internationally known keynote speaker, and author of 90+ peer-reviewed publications.

IONS is currently conducting a new scientific research study on mediums using a Muse EEG headband. This cutting-edge research may help define how we perceive intuition and consciousness.
