Join IONS Director of Operations Rusty Shores for a conversation with renowned integral scholar Dr. Sean Esbjörn-Hargens exploring how Integral Theory, a multidisciplinary framework for understanding the complexity of reality and human experience, can be applied to Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP), reported encounters with Non-Human Intelligences (NHI), and other anomalous experiences.
Drawing on Sean’s work in the emerging field of Exo-Studies, Rusty will invite him to unpack concepts for approaching these challenging subjects, including “Pollock’s Brush,” the “Mutual Enactment Dynamic,” and his perspectives on the role of subtle bodies in anomalous encounters.
Together, they will explore what becomes possible when we bring multiple disciplines, perspectives, and ways of knowing into conversation with one another. Rather than seeking simple explanations for complex phenomena, this discussion invites curiosity about how philosophical, scientific, cultural, psychological, and experiential perspectives might contribute to a richer understanding of questions that remain unresolved.

PRESENTERS
Dr. Sean Esbjörn-Hargens is a globally recognized leader in the application of integrative thinking and metadisciplinary research methodologies. He received his PhD in Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness from the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS). Over a career spanning three decades, Sean has developed groundbreaking “metaintegral” frameworks across fields as diverse as ecology, mixed-methods research, and the post-materialist philosophy of science. A prolific author and editor, Sean has published over two dozen articles and eight books, including Integral Ecology, and is the founding editor of the SUNY series in Integral Theory.
In 2018, Sean founded the Institute of Exo Studies, pioneering a new field that applies comprehensive integral models to anomalous realities, Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP), and Non-Human Intelligences (NHI). By cross-referencing over 150 academic, esoteric, and paranormal disciplines, his work charts new paradigms to help make sense of our complex, multidimensional multiverse. Sean currently serves as a consultant and developer of cutting-edge graduate programs, including the Integral Noetic Sciences program at the California Institute of Human Science (CIHS).
Rusty Shores is the Director of Operations at the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS), where he has served as a core organizational leader since 2007. He holds an MA in Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness from the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS). Deeply immersed in Integral Theory for over two decades, Rusty applies a sophisticated systems-thinking perspective to both the strategic development and day-to-day operations of IONS, ensuring the organizational infrastructure dynamically supports the evolution of frontier science.
Driven by a lifelong curiosity regarding the “cracks” in consensus reality, Rusty’s personal and professional inquiries span parapsychology, metaphysics, the evolution of consciousness, and ancient mysteries. Since 2013, he has focused intensely on the multi-faceted UAP/NHI phenomenon, exploring how multidisciplinary and integral frameworks can be used to navigate the extreme complexity of non-human intelligence and expand our collective understanding of the noetic universe.
