Have you ever known someone you love was upset before they told you? Thought of a close friend moments before they called? Felt that something was happening with someone you care about, despite being miles apart? Or had an intuitive or noetic experience that seemed especially powerful because of the bond you shared with another person?
Many of us have experienced moments when we seem unusually attuned to the people we love. These experiences raise fascinating questions about the relationship between emotion, connection, and noetic experiences. Does being deeply bonded with another person affect how we experience an intuitive or seemingly nonlocal connection? And what role might our emotions play?
In this Global Gathering for Members, we’ll explore emotional resonance and the noetic bonds between us, inspired in part by new research from IONS scientist Garret Yount. His recent pilot study investigated whether the physiological activity of one person could correspond with the experiences of a distant, emotionally bonded partner. The research offers an intriguing scientific doorway into a much larger exploration of how we experience connection with those closest to us.
We’ll begin with a brief introduction to the research before turning the conversation to our own experiences. Together, we’ll explore questions such as: Are our noetic experiences different when they involve someone with whom we share a strong emotional bond? Are there particular emotions or circumstances that seem to heighten our sense of connection? How do these experiences show up – as thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations, dreams, or simply a sense of knowing? And how might we distinguish emotional resonance from expectation, projection, or coincidence?
As always, there are no right answers. This is an opportunity to bring together science, lived experience, and collective inquiry as we explore the mysterious ways we may connect with one another.
The Global Gatherings Structure
Our Global Gatherings feature a formal program (60 min) of context setting, experiential exploration, and discussion, and a bonus 30 minutes at the end of the program for those who would like to stay on Zoom to continue the conversation with each other.
Unlike a traditional webinar, Noetic Global Gatherings are highly interactive community conversations. The primary focus of the gathering is small-group discussion with fellow IONS members. If you enjoy exploring ideas, sharing perspectives, and learning from others in community, this gathering is for you!
