Decoding Noetic Phenomena: Validating the 12-Factor Noetic Signature Inventory Tool

The word “noetic” refers to having inner wisdom or direct knowledge, including an understanding of present or future events that goes beyond what is gathered through the traditional five senses. For example, someone experiences a dream that predicts a future event. Or another person has a subtle feeling or thought about what will happen next without perceivable clues that could be tied to this knowledge. Psychic abilities, energy healing, and mind-matter interactions are all noetic experiences that have been described across cultures, continents, and historical data. Recently, studies have even highlighted the positive impact these experiences appear to have on mental health and well-being. Yet, we have a limited understanding of these phenomena.

For this reason, our scientists at IONS developed a qualitative and statistical process for investigating noetic experiences. This tool, called the Noetic Signature Inventory (NSI), is a 44-item process validated through tests on multiple populations. Upon further analysis of this tool for logical patterns and groupings, 12 factors or areas of intuitive knowing were identified. Ensuring the validity of these factors allows for future data analyses using the NSI tool to be more consistent, reliable, and easier to interpret.

Thus, our recent study, The Noetic Signature Inventory: 12-Factor Confirmatory Factor Analysis, focuses on examining and validating the 12-factor structure of the NSI.

Investigating the Structure of the Noetic Signature Inventory

The 2,415 participants of this study were recruited from the IONS membership. All were aged 18 and up and had prior noetic experiences. Each participant completed the subjective 44-item NSI questionnaire using a sliding scale ranging from Strongly Disagree (0) to Strongly Agree (100); there were no “right” or “wrong” answers. Our researchers applied confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), a method for assessing the reliability of identified patterns and factors within a tool and for confirming whether the items fit the hypothesized 12 factor structure. Goodness-of-fit analyses using four independent techniques, including the traditional chi-square test, were applied to further support the CFA results.

Validating the NSI 12-Factor Structure

Statistical analysis of the CFA results revealed a very good model fit to the NSI data. These results further support the 12-factor structure of the NSI. For reference, The 12 factors of the Noetic Signature Inventory are: (1) General Intuition, (2) Embodied Sensations, (3) Visualizing to Access or Affect, (4) Inner Knowing Through Touch, (5) Healing, (6) Knowing the Future, (7) Physical Sensations from Other People, (8) Knowing Yourself, (9) Knowing Other’s Minds, (10) Apparent Communication with Non-physical Beings, (11) Knowing Through Dreams, and (12) Inner Voice.

Of note, this study included participants of varying ages from 67 countries and multiple racial backgrounds, highlighting the potential broad applicability and reliability of this framework for future noetic research. Thus, although the sample population was largely Western and the study relied on self-reported measures, the findings still provide a strong foundation for understanding how people experience noetic experiences. However, as with most research, there are always improvements and additional studies necessary to confirm and further these results.

The Future of Noetic Investigations

The findings of this confirmatory analysis expand the growing foundation for investigating noetic experiences. Future research in more diverse populations, using additional measures and examining stability over time, will help strengthen the reliability and applicability of the NSI. Ongoing research using the NSI will help pave the way for a much deeper, scientifically grounded exploration of noetic phenomena.
