In the spring of this year, I’ll be launching ENTANGLED — a free mobile app based on the Global Consciousness Project, which examines random data for meaningful correlations that may reflect the presence and activity of consciousness in the world. With Entangled, I hope to give the world a better understanding of what it means to say “we’re all connected.”
Using devices called random number generators (RNGs), for several decades labs like IONS and Princeton University’s PEAR lab have been exploring how human minds seem to have an unexplained influence on chaotic systems. How this influence works is still a mystery, but it suggests that consciousness is more deeply connected to the fabric of reality than previously imagined.
Going a step further, the Global Consciousness Project has found intriguing evidence that RNGs spread around the world register similar effects when global events synchronize the attention of millions of people, such as the attacks of 9/11 and New Year celebrations. During such times, the RNGs are often seen to depart from their ordinary random behaviour, with mysterious patterns of order emerging in the data.
The Entangled app is the result of three years of research and development. When downloaded, the app converts hardware functions on your phone into a physical RNG. Previous research suggests that its output can be influenced by your mind. You’ll be able to explore and play with the REG in your phone through visualizations, as well as all those those participating in an event, or the entire planet. This data, which is uploaded anonymously to our servers, creates a living network which will be analyzed for possible mind-matter effects on a local and global scale.
Here’s what you can expect:
Personal Experiences
The app will give you a personal experience of the kinds of mind-matter experiments we do in the lab, but in a tangible and colorful way. In addition to exploring mind-matter interaction through simple graphs and visual displays, by downloading it, you’ll also be effortlessly participating in the world’s largest consciousness research experiment.
Mass Experiments
Entangled will create a platform for large-scale, opt-in consciousness research experiments that simplify data collection and analysis. A few of the experiments we have planned include:
- Mass Meditation: What happens when a hundred-thousand people meditate at once? In collaboration with Unify.org, we will study RNG data records collected from smartphones to find out.
- Natural Disasters: Can the collective unconscious “sense” the arrival of natural disasters, such as earthquakes, before they happen? Can tapping into the collective unconscious improve the efficacy of early warning systems?
- Concerts: Will the excitement and shared atmosphere of concerts and big celebrations produce produce mind-matter effects? Opt in and find out!
API/Developer Support
Correctly building and utilizing RNG systems is harder than it sounds. We’ll aim to simplify that by making an API that enables software developers, artists, and other creators to tap into global network data in real-time, and do cool stuff.
I’m honored and excited to be collaborating with IONS researchers. My purpose is to promote deeper thinking about consciousness, explore the boundaries between mind and reality through experiments, and help expand our technological horizon.
Gratitude and acknowledgement goes to Cassi and Dean at IONS, Bob and Brenda at PEAR, and Roger and Peter at GCP: your vision is matched only by your kindness. Thank you.
