This September, we celebrate the birthday and legacy of our founder, Dr. Edgar Mitchell. As an Apollo 14 astronaut, Dr. Mitchell experienced a profound epiphany while looking back at Earth from space—an overwhelming sense of universal interconnectedness that forever changed the trajectory of his life.
Recognizing the need to reconcile scientific precision with the wisdom of inner knowing, he stepped away from outer space exploration to pioneer a new frontier. He founded IONS to explore the deep, interconnected reality between our internal experience and the physical universe, establishing a legacy that continues to inspire us today.
Bridging Outer and Inner Space
Exploring outer space dramatically expanded humanity’s potential, but exploring inner space is the next frontier. For over 50 years, our scientists have researched a radical idea: that consciousness isn’t separate from reality, but fundamental to it. Understanding this profound connection could be one of the most vital endeavors for our collective future.
In his book, From Outer Space to Inner Space, Dr. Mitchell traces his journey through both physical cosmos and the human mind. Bridging the material and mystical, he introduces a model of reality where mind and physical laws interact, reminding us that consciousness plays an active role in shaping our shared destiny.
Our Mission Forward
Building on Edgar’s insights into the fundamental role of consciousness, IONS continues to carry this vision forward by honoring the monumental legacy of the Apollo missions and Edgar’s groundbreaking moonwalk. In October, we will bring this perspective to New York City for Mission:60s, an immersive gathering inside JFK airport’s iconic TWA Flight Center that bridges the optimism and ambition of early space exploration with the future of human discovery.
IONS is proud to sponsor this event alongside Space for Humanity to build a bridge between inner and outer space. Featuring real science, vision, and speakers including IONS’ Claudia Welss, Thomas Brophy, and guests from NASA, it offers a unique opportunity for our Board, leadership, and community to gather, connect, and celebrate our space legacy together.
Make a Gift in Edgar’s Honor
Dr. Mitchell broke boundaries when he founded IONS after his epiphany. Today, we honor his vision through groundbreaking research on energy healing, meditation, lucid dreaming, PTSD, channeling, and more—work made possible entirely by the generosity of people like you.
We are deeply grateful to everyone who has given in honor of Edgar’s birthday. There is still time to make a special gift to ensure IONS impacts society for generations to come—thank you for helping us embrace the power of legacy and build a brighter future.
