Charity Check-Up
How does your preferred charitable organization or nonprofit rate? You might consider utilizing Charity Navigator and GuideStar and give a charity check-up to your favorites. Since 2002, using objective analysis, Charity Navigator has awarded only the most fiscally responsible organizations, including IONS, a 4-star rating. In 2011 and 2017, Charity Navigator added and then updated 17 metrics, focused on governance and ethical practices as well as measures of openness, to its ratings methodology. These accountability & transparency metrics, which account for 50 percent of an organization’s overall rating, reveal which charities operate in accordance with industry best practices and whether they are open with their donors and stakeholders. These enhancements further substantiates the financial health of four-star charities .
And as the nation’s premier nonprofit database, GuideStar‘s mission is to revolutionize philanthropy by providing information that advances transparency, enables users to make better decisions, and encourages charitable giving. GuideStar released the first searchable electronic database of nonprofits in 1996 and has since expanded the database to include all tax-exempt organizations registered with IRS. Profiles of 2.7 million organizations are available through GuideStar’s and more than 200 other websites and applications, including Facebook, Amazon, Google, and Fidelity Charitable. In 2018, more than 10 million people used GuideStar data to make decisions about nonprofits and the work they do.
