In celebration of Edgar’s birthday, we’re sharing a recording from the Science of Mind publications, titled Spaceship Earth.
A generous IONS Supporter kindly shared this, and here’s her message with memories from the event:
Hello,
I have a cassette recording of a talk that Dr. Mitchell gave at an event I was attending in 1970-1973 (?) in Los Angeles. The cassette I have was published by the Science of Mind publications who I used to work for. It is titled Spaceship Earth. I recently uncovered the cassette in my family’s vast library, which I am currently creating an inventory for.
I vaguely remember the evening. My stepfather was a minister of what was called at the time Religious Science/Science of Mind. Today, they are called Centers for Spiritual Living. He was at the cutting edge of this field and I’m so grateful I grew up in this atmosphere.
Dr. Mitchell’s talk was like ‘preaching to the choir’ in that his perceptions and message were in line with what our group knew at a deep ‘knowing’ level. He was remarking about what Jim Erwin said about feeling the presence of god. Dr. Mitchell said. “I totally agree with Jim and totally understand what he is saying. I would say there is consciousness and intelligence, a will behind the functioning of the universe. Certainly, this universe is not a random chaotic place from a viewpoint here in space, looking at our small planet, one gains an overwhelming sense of unity of purpose, of beauty, of harmony that could be on this planet.“
To hear a pragmatic scientist, astronaut talking on this level about global consciousness at this time, was heartwarming, inspirational and I felt it’s about time that the science community take all this seriously and apply the scientific method
He goes on to say regarding awareness “in our modern society do we have some tangible objective means of knowing that these ideas about consciousness are not all a hallucination? Is there a way that we can check the subjective impressions that many of us have felt and many people throughout the ages have felt. I submit to you that there is.”
I was in my early 20s at the time and not only resonated with everything he said, which I’m only now remembering as I listen to the tape, but I do remember clearly that at the time I thought he was cute
Anyway, I would like to send the cassette to the Institute for your Archives and I think everyone would enjoy listening to it as well.
