This study aimed to examine the effects of a specifically developed noetic intervention designed to encourage maternal infant bonding and communication in pregnant Latina teenagers in Marin County, many of whom are highly stressed economically or by virtue of recent immigration. Because significant risks are associated with teenage pregnancy, particularly in low income populations, the intervention provided 8 weekly classes covering nutritional education, simple, non-sectarian meditation techniques aimed at stress reduction, and social support. An innovative component included theatrical improvisation designed to facilitate individual self-awareness and self-expression. This project attempted to facilitate connection between the mother and her unborn child, with the other new mothers, and the community. Outcome included measurements of self-concept, depression, parental stress, and infant development. We have completed the analysis and a preliminary report. A manuscript reporting the results is in preparation.
