IONS is currently planning a two month summer internship program with start dates between . This would be a more concentrated internship; the details are still being evaluated, but may require a commitment of about 20 hours per week at the IONS campus.
If you would like to be considered for a summer internship, please complete an online application below. Next steps are to submit two writing samples and the names and phone numbers of two references to Charlene Farrell at firstname.lastname@example.org. Preferred papers are those involving literature reviews or other research papers, but if unavailable, you can submit any work that demonstrates your writing skills.
The field of psychology has already included religion and spirituality in most definitions of multiculturalism and requires training in multicultural competence, but most psychotherapists receive little or no training in religious and spiritual issues, in part because no agreed-on set of spiritual competencies or training guidelines exist. In response to this need, IONS President and CEO, Cassandra Vieten, PhD, and her colleagues have developed a proposed set of spiritual and religious competencies for psychologists based on (1) a comprehensive literature review, (2) a focus group with scholars and clinicians, and (3) an online survey of 184 scholars and clinicians experienced in the integration of spiritual and religious beliefs and practices and psychology.
Cassi and her colleague, Shelley Scammell, PsyD, are currently working on a book for New Harbinger expanding upon the research described in the following article:
Vieten, C., Scammell, S., Pilato, R., Ammondson, I., Pargament, K. Lukoff, D. (2013) Spiritual and Religious Competencies for Psychologists. Psychology of Religion and Spirituality, Aug 2013. 5(3),129-144. Online First Publication, June 17, 2013. doi: 10.1037/a0032699
Dr. Vieten is currently looking for an intern to assist with this project.
