The field of psychology has already included religion and spirituality in most definitions of multiculturalism and requires training in multicultural competence, but most psychotherapists receive little or no training in religious and spiritual issues, in part because no agreed-on set of spiritual competencies or training guidelines exist. In response to this need, IONS President and CEO, Cassandra Vieten, PhD, and her colleagues have developed a proposed set of spiritual and religious competencies for psychologists based on (1) a comprehensive literature review, (2) a focus group with scholars and clinicians, and (3) an online survey of 184 scholars and clinicians experienced in the integration of spiritual and religious beliefs and practices and psychology.
Cassi and her colleague, Shelley Scammell, PsyD, are currently working on a book for New Harbinger expanding upon the research described in the following article:
Vieten, C., Scammell, S., Pilato, R., Ammondson, I., Pargament, K. Lukoff, D. (2013) Spiritual and Religious Competencies for Psychologists. Psychology of Religion and Spirituality, Aug 2013. 5(3),129-144. Online First Publication, June 17, 2013. doi: 10.1037/a0032699
Dr. Vieten is currently looking for an intern to assist with this project.
Excellent writing skills. Ability to search, analyze, synthesize, and summarize current literature relevant to this subject. BA or BS, and preferably enrolled in a graduate program in a related field. Personal interest in this topic is helpful. Available 6-12 hours per week. Able to attend meetings every two weeks at the Institute of Noetic Sciences' offices in Petaluma, CA. This project may last for up to a year.
A white paper is a report that presents information and/or proposals on a topic, and is usually written by an individual, organization, or other group with authoritative background on that topic. Currently there exist a few white papers on subtle energies written by active researchers within the field; however, such documents are, to a large extent, written from an idiosyncratic perspective, and some of these reports are used as part of the sales literature associated with subtle energies products, reducing their credibility.
A comprehensive, neutral white paper surveying the current state of the subtle energies field, written from an interdisciplinary perspective for an audience of professionals and lay people, would provide a valuable resource. The report would also serve as a roadmap for active researchers in the field, as its contents will provide a comprehensive mapping of the subtle energies field and serve as a tool for strategic direction and hypothesis formation.
This is the resource you as an intern will help to create. The majority of the report will be based upon systematic reviews of studies investigating various subtle energy techniques and theories. This selective literature review will highlight therapies that have been investigated using both scientific methods and qualitatively persuasive anecdotal accounts. As an intern you have the opportunity to research and write these reviews, as well as contribute to the editing process and, depending on how long you are with us, implementation of the resource.
