Stuart will present a modern scientific perspective on shamanism—practical techniques for working in the spirit worlds. He will present background on what shamanism is (and isn’t), and how it fits into both world-wide indigenous cultures as well as modern western life. He will lead the group in an experiential exercise—the shamanic journey. Hopefully there will be ample time for questions and discussion. Please feel free to bring a drum or rattle if you have one – most of the world’s cultures use “sonic driving” for the journey, rather than hallucinogens – and we will too. You might want to journal your experiences, so bring writing materials. Many people prefer to lie on the floor for journeying, so you might also bring a blanket or pad, and something to cover your eyes.
Stuart started his explorations into the “big questions” in the realms of mathematics, graduating with his BA from UC Berkeley (cum laude). He then embarked on several parallel lines of inquiry – in the sciences he spent 11 years as a graduate student in biophysics, also at Berkeley – first studying the physiology of meditation (inspired by joining a meditation center, where he lived for over 30 years), then developing a mathematical model of lung tumor initiation and growth. He worked in the life sciences and high tech until 2001.
While working in technology he lived and practiced at Ramagiri Ashram under the teacher Eknath Easwaran. The focus of life at the Ashram was meditation – often over four hours a day – and the study of the world’s mystical traditions from all religions. Eventually Stuart’s interests broadened and he met the radical English philosopher and non-dual teacher Douglas Harding—most famous for his little book On Having No Head – and the Zen of the Obvious. Stuart was “beheaded” and it hasn’t come back. He also studied and began practicing somatics and bodywork, which he continues today.
This quest to “follow the miracles” of healing led to the study of, and initiation into shamanism—you might think of it as “applied mysticism.” Shamanism (and the nature-spirit connection) has become Stuart’s passion—both as a practice, and teaching. With his wife Anne they have an on-going series of classes in experiential shamanism, both introductory as well as advanced initiations and trainings.
