Meet the Leading Scientists of Consciousness Research

We are excited to share this series of short videos highlighting the scientific research of some of our staff and visiting scholars. Video-taped in November and December 2014, this series shows how our researchers are making advances in our understanding of consciousness, and the many possibilities and applications we envision that research having with respect to individual and societal transformation. View the videos below to learn about how IONS is leading the pursuit of the science of what connects us!

IONS Visiting Scholar Loren Carpenter

on the Nature of Collective Consciousness

With 30 years of experience revolutionizing the film industry as co-founder of Pixar Animation Studios, Loren joined IONS earlier this year to put his software engineering mastery to work gathering and analyzing data in search of a theory that explains collective consciousness. Loren led the design of a new sensor device that measures quantum entropy, or changes in random streams of data that indicate coherence when large groups of people are focusing on the same event at the same time. In this video, he explains how we used this new "Ambient Quantum Entropy Sensor" at the Burning Man festival this year and gives a sneak peek into the amazing results.

IONS Staff Scientist Garret Yount

on the Role of Consciousness in Gene Expression

Garret's area of expertise is molecular neurobiology, and he has been associated with IONS since 1995 when he received a small grant that allowed him to work with biofield practitioners and spiritual healers in a laboratory setting. Today he is doing groundbreaking work in bridging human genomics with aspects of consciousness and the non-material mind, which includes studying how meditation affects gene expression in the body. Listen to Garret discuss the incredible potential this research has in helping to inform and shift humanity.

IONS Chief Scientist Dean Radin

Beyond Supernormal: Current Research Projects

Last year, Dean released his book Supernormal: Science, Yoga, and the Evidence for Extraordinary Psychic Abilities, a rigorous exploration into the ancient practice of yoga which takes readers on a journey from yoga's Indian origins to its adoption across the western world, while holding his deep and solid academic research experience into psi phenomena as a way to test whether claims of telepathy, precognition, and other forms of mind-matter interaction by yogis can be proven and scientifically understood. So, do you want to know what Dean's working on now, beyond Supernormal? Tune into this video to find out!

IONS President Cassandra Vieten

on the Science of Transformation

While Cassandra may be the President and CEO of IONS, her foundations with the organization are built on more than a decade of the cutting-edge consciousness research we've become known for. Her acclaimed work in transformative psychology culminated in her works as co-author of Living Deeply: The Art and Science of Transformation in Everyday Life, and author of Mindful Motherhood: Practical Tools for Staying Sane During Pregnancy and Your Child's First Year. She's currently working on her much anticipated book on spiritual competencies for psychologists, as she leads IONS into a new era where our science is going mainstream, our transformative education programs span every phase of life, and we're offering more opportunities for experiential learning and community building than ever before. In this wrap-up of 2014, Cassandra talks about the the big picture for humanity behind the science of what connects us.
