Carole Angermeir
Carole Angermeir is dedicated to world travel to foster global understanding and personal transformation. She is founder and CEO of Cross Cultural Journeys (CCJ), which provides the Travel Program for IONS. She is an active Director of the CCJ Foundation, which funds projects in the countries CCJ travels to, and offers scholarships for young international emerging leaders.
With a lifetime interest in anthropology, Carole has devoted much of her life to studying and assisting people in developing countries. In 1970 she conducted field research in the Yucatan, where she lived in a primitive Mayan village with her two small children for a year. She helped establish eye clinics in 35 developing countries utilizing volunteer American ophthalmologists. She also originated a program that brought third-world ophthalmologists to study in the United States.
Carole joined the institute's board in 1985. She founded and is past president of the American Committee for Tyre, an international effort to protect this ancient archeological site in Lebanon, was an early Board member of the New York Women’s Foundation, is a member of Women’s Forum West, the International Women’s Forum, and Social Venture Network. For ten years she was a single engine airplane pilot.
