About our Speaker
Jerry B. Brown, PhD, is the director of the Safe Energy Project an important initiative of the World Business Academy's continuing efforts to monitor and report on the carcinogenic health effects of the "normal operations" of America's l04 nuclear power plants - http://worldbusiness.org
The Project's goals are straightforward and achievable: to permanently close California's two remaining nuclear power plants and replace them with sustainable energy systems, thereby reducing the risk of cancer for people living nearby. The last two reactors in California are: San Onofre, which has been shut down since January 2012 due to accidental releases of radioactivity into the environment; and Diablo Canyon, which is located on the coast near two major earthquake faults, exposing Californians to the risk of a Fukushima-type accident.
Throughout his career, Dr. Brown has pursued nonviolent strategies to create positive social and environmental change. In the late 1960s, he lived in Delano, where he co-coordinated Cesar Chavez's Grape Boycott on behalf of California farm workers. In the mid-1980s, he served as the Northern California Executive Director for Business Executives for National Security, an organization of Fortune 1000 executives that worked to prevent nuclear war and end the Cold War.
From 1998 to 2003, Dr. Brown was a Research Associate with the Radiation and Public Health Project (RPHP), a national public interest organization that conducted the Strontium-90 Baby Teeth Study to investigate the links between environmental radiation from nuclear power plants and America's cancer crisis.
Dr. Brown is a Founding Professor at Florida International University in Miami, where he teaches courses on anthropology, energy policy and globalization. He received his undergraduate degree in Philosophy from Antioch College and his doctorate in Anthropology from Cornell University.
Dr. Brown is co-author of Profiles in Power: The Antinuclear Movement and the Dawn of the Solar Age (1997) and Freedom from Mid-East Oil (2007). He is author of numerous journal articles, monographs and technical reports on nuclear power and renewable energy system.
"We owe Jerry Brown, Rinaldo Brutoco, and James Cusumano a huge debt for writing Freedom from Mid-East Oil. If we follow the very practical ideas in this book, we can quickly move beyond our oil addiction which poses a great threat to the world in the 21st century. However, this book goes beyond that. Oil addiction, global warming, ecological devastation, social injustice, extreme ecological disparities, racial poverty, war and terrorism, and Hurricane Katrina, are all interdependent and linked to each other. The practical steps offered in this book could literally save our world."
- Deepak Chopra, President of the Alliance for a New Humanity
"This stimulating synthesis provides a roadmap for solving the oil and climate problems simultaneously. The World Business Academy's Prometheus Plan in Freedom from Mid-East Oil exemplifies the business leadership necessary to begin the profitable transition beyond oil."
- Amory B. Lovins, Chairman, Rocky Mountain Institute
