Jim will give an overview of tracking, bird language, and some of the lore that comes down to us from the ancient verbal and contemporary animal tracking traditions. This material is treated in the context of biology and the cognitive sciences, with particular focus on the concept of the "organism-environment coupling" as described in work of Mark Johnson, George Lakoff, Francisco Varela, Vittorio Gallese, and others. Out of this background Jim will explore the outline of a fully modern spiritual life based on gratitude, consistent with science and tied back to our very earliest roots as human beings.
Jim Sullivan is a 4th generation Sonoma county native who lives near Occidental. A long time environmental activist, he also wrote a column for the Bodega Bay Navigator for eight years. A graduate of Notre Dame, Jim studied in Vienna, Austria, and did graduate work at several other Universities, and still takes occasional classes at the Santa Rosa Junior College. He served 4 years in the infantry, including two years in Korea with the United Nations occupation forces, where in 1962 he resigned his commission in protest over US policies in Asia. After a career as a landscape designer/contractor he retired in the early 90s and has been painting almost daily since. He operates a tracking guide and workshop business and writes and lectures on art, tracking, and other subjects.
