IONS Executive Director of Research Cassandra Vieten will be speaking at TEDx Napa Valley on December 2, 2012. The theme of the event is "Connected," and Dr. Vieten will give a talk on how exciting evidence from frontier science is converging with insights from the world's wisdom traditions illuminating how profoundly we are interconnected with each other and our world. The event will feature up to 15 of the region’s leading thinkers, innovators, artists, philosophers, and entertainers representing such diverse fields as technology, entertainment, visual and performance art, design, politics, music, ecology, education, and more.
The Senior Vice President of Public Affairs at MTV, a former U.S. Marine Corps military working dog handler, and a noetic science expert are among the impressive lineup of confirmed speakers to present at this year’s TEDxNapaValley 2012. Napa Valley’s own regionally hosted TED-like conference is scheduled for December 2 at the historic Napa Valley Opera house in downtown Napa. Each confirmed speaker will share their valuable insights on this year’s theme, "Connected."
A special early bird price of $50 per ticket will be available for a limited time before they rise to the full price of $75. A limited number of tickets will also be offered at a special price for non-profits and students. Cassandra Vieten, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist, Executive Director of Research at the Institute of Noetic Sciences, Scientist at California Pacific Medical Center Research Institute, and co-president of the Institute for Spirituality and Psychology. Her research has focused on spirituality and health, consciousness studies, mindfulness-based behavioral interventions, and experiences and practices that lead to a more meaningful, compassionate, and service-oriented way of life. Her primary interest lies in how psychology, biology, and spirituality interact to affect experience and behavior.
Dianne Aigaki is an artist, nonprofit consultant, explorer, and tour leader. She maintains a residence in North Carolina as well as Dharamsala, India (the major Tibetan refugee community in exile). There, she works as a volunteer for various non-profit organizations and Tibetan exile government departments training individuals and groups to write solid project plans and compelling fund-raising proposals and helping to develop adult education and community garden projects.
Jean Arnold, President of Hanzell Vineyards, boasts over thirty years of wine industry experience in business leadership, executive management, marketing, and sales. Jean enjoys talking with professional organizations about mentoring women executives as well as giving inspirational workshops on the power of “feminine” leadership. She founded the Jean Arnold Group Foundation, an organization committed to raising funds for Women’s Health and Breast Cancer Research.
Master Sculptor Mario Chiodo has been the owner, designer, and lead sculptor of his own firm for twenty years in the Bay Area. From consumer products and play sculptures for children, to large monumental installations, Mario has created artwork that delights and teases the imagination all over the country. Mario believes that the lessons of history should never be forgotten and aims to inspire and enrich the lives of others through his art. Mario’s most current project is a bronze monument dedicated to twenty-five international humanitarians.
Mike Dowling is an actor, former U.S. Marine Corps military working dog handler and author of the critically acclaimed book Sergeant Rex: The Unbreakable Bond Between A Marine and His Military Working Dog. Deployed to Iraq’s infamous Triangle of Death in 2004, he and his military dog, Rex, were part of the first Marine Corps dog teams deployed to the front lines of combat since the Vietnam War. They were awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for their actions.
Alongside a volunteer crew, California artist Peter Hassen is installing “The Values Project,” throughout Sacramento this fall. Peter’s undertaking is an ephemeral stencil project placing 1000 thought-provoking words, like Honor and Compassion, in over 75 parking lots citywide. Sacramento is the artist’s second citywide installation of values; in 2011 he completed the installation of over 500 values words in Napa. Peter has exhibited his work, ranging from sculpture, painting, and installation, in national galleries and public lands for over two decades.
For over forty years, Sheldon H. Kardener, MD, has written extensively, practiced psychodynamic psychotherapy, with a special interest in couple therapy, and taught every mental health discipline both in the United States and Sweden. His book, Breaking Free: How Chains From Childhood Keep Us From What We Want, distills and illuminates his unique approach to the field. He is currently a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at UCLA.
Jason Rzepka is senior vice president of public affairs at MTV, the #1 global youth brand. Jason’s charge, quite simply, is to use MTV’s superpowers for good. Jason does this by marshaling the network’s forces to engage and activate America’s youth on the biggest challenges facing their generation. He is responsible for the strategic direction of all of MTV’s “pro-social” campaigns, including “Power of 12,” which is helping unleash the exponential power of young voters in the 2012 elections and beyond. Jason regularly serves as an expert resource on issues including youth mobilization, social media for social change, cyberbullying, sexual health, and more.
Holly Stiel is a trailblazing service philosopher and author who innovated a method of training based on the practices and principles of the world-class concierge. In 1976, Holly became the first female concierge in the country when she created the desk at the Grand Hyatt Union Square in San Francisco. Among her clients today are Disney, Nordstrom, AVEDA, American Express, Visa Signature card, and Auberge Resorts. She recently received the association’s Lifetime Achievement award for her broad contributions to her profession.
