The modern world generally considers science to be our most reliable process to explore the nature of reality. How much is this view justified? A great deal less than thought by those who think science is the road to discovering what is ultimately real...
Science really took off when it adopted a working definition of the word "real.” Real was that which could be measured. This simple conceit was intended to calm arguments between religionistas and natural philosophers, i.e., scientists. Priests could argue about angels dancing on pinheads, but scientists could not unless they could measure them.
We often take assumptions for granted and as obviously true. But when are they? In the west we often say if your only tool is a hammer, then everything begins to look like a nail. In Japan they say, "The nail that sticks out gets hammered down.”
In this talk we will take another look at the things we have constructed and those things – important things – that may be too subtle to measure or construct.
