Contemplative Practice: Promise, Perils, and Pitfalls
with Willoughby Britton, PhD
The Institute of Noetic Sciences and
The Institute for Spirituality and Psychology
Sunday, December 11, 10:30am – 12:30pm
Meditation and other contemplative practices have been assumed to be uniformly beneficial, and the dedication of scholars and researchers to their own contemplative practice and their research on meditation has at times, limited the conversation about potential difficulties that can arise along the contemplative path. Join us for a lively discussion of the complexities of meditation.
Willoughby Britton received her PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Arizona, completed her clinical internship at Brown Medical School, sleep/EEG technician training at Harvard Medical School, and was a Research Fellow at the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA/NIH) and at Andrew Weil's Program. Dr. Britton spent several years in Asia studying meditative techniques and received her mindfulness instructor certification training at the Center for Mindfulness at the UMASS Medical School. Dr. Britton's research includes sleep, emotional disturbances, and new treatment/prevention strategies. She recently completed a 3-year NIH-funded clinical trial on the neurophysiological effects of mindfulness meditation in depression, and continues to examine the link between sleep, affective disturbance, and emotional regulation strategies. Two current research projects aim to examine the effects of meditation practices in 6th graders and college students.
