This workshop will provide simple tools for responding in a kind and supportive manner whenever we confront our own human imperfection or experience emotional challenges. We all want to avoid pain, but letting it in—and responding compassionately to our own imperfections without harsh self-condemnation—is an essential step toward living a happier, more fulfilling life. Using lecture, meditation, scientific research, interactive exercises, and discussion, you will learn:

  • The three core components of self-compassion
  • How to handle difficult emotions with greater ease
  • How to overcome common blocks to self-compassion
  • How to motivate yourself with kindness rather than self-criticism

This workshop uses exercises taken from the Mindful Self-Compassion program, an empirically supported 8-week training course Neff co-created with colleague Chris Germer. The course is relevant to the general public as well as to practicing mental health professionals, and has the power to radically transform the way you relate to yourself and your life.

Self-Compassion Book Testimonials

"A beautiful book that helps us all see the way to cure the world – one person at a time – starting with yourself.  Read it and start the journey." —Rosie O'Donnell, talk show host

"A portable friend to all readers – especially but not only women – who need to learn that the Golden Rule works only if it's reversible: We must learn to treat ourselves as well as we wish to treat others." —Gloria Steinem, feminist organizer and author of Revolution from Within

Comments about Kristin Neff’s work:

"Kristin Neff moves the entire study of compassion forward."  —Sharon Salzberg, author of Lovingkindness

Kristin Neff, PhD, a pioneer and one of the world’s leading experts on self-compassion, is Associate Professor at the University of Texas at Austin. After completing her PhD at UC Berkeley in 1997, she did post-doctoral research at Denver University on self-compassion—a construct central to Buddhist psychology. The scale she created to measure self-compassion, published in 2003, is used by hundreds of researchers worldwide. She is author of Self-Compassion (William Morrow, 2011), and her family was recently featured in the documentary film and book The Horse Boy.
