Loren Carpenter is a computer scientist and visiting scholar at IONS. After thirty-five years as a senior scientist with Pixar Animation Studios, he recently retired. In 1980 he created the world's first fractal animated film and then went on to join Lucasfilm Computer Division, which spun off into Pixar. In 2001 he received an Academy Award for inventing cinema-quality digital image synthesis. A fellow of the ACM, Loren has won numerous other awards for computer science and computer graphics.
